Dedicated on July 4, 1869, the soldier on the left represents war and the woman on the right represents Peace. The Battle of Gettysburg, taking place on the dates on the monument, had pro-slavery Americans fighting anti-slavery Americans. Between 46,000 and 51,000 Americans died battling each other here.
